It just sounds normal, kind of like a super HD-580. Overwhelming because this headphone does two things very right. It didn’t redefine my paradigm of what music sounds like, and I feel like my modest home system takes me close to where the HE-1 is in terms of musical enjoyment. Underwhelming because at the end of the day, it’s just a headphone. HE-1: Underwhelming and overwhelming at the same time. If I had 20K to spend on headphones this would be my setup. That’s not something you would notice without trying them back-to-back though. I tried this right after the HE-1 and my notes say “perfect except tone is unnatural compared to HE-1”. It’s not missing anything anywhere, just right across the board. Of course, it goes without saying that the level of detail retrieval is amazing, second only to HE-1. The notes have lots of fullness and body, and it’s probably the widest soundstage I’ve ever heard on a headphone. X9000: X9000 with blue Hawaii was the best setup I heard at last year’s canjam, and I felt the grand cayman was equal or better. I feel like when I hear estats from a blue Hawaii or grand cayman they are the best headphones I’ve ever heard. I should note that I did not like the Corina on another setup, but that was probably more related to the gear used (LTA Z10 and a non-oversampling DAC) than the Corina itself. Perhaps a bit less detailed than X-9000 but the room was noisy, so it was difficult to tell. Comparing with the DCA Expanse next to it, the Corina felt like sound enveloped me, while the Expanse felt like sound was in a fairly wide but narrow plane. Not delicate and ethereal sounding like electrostats tend to be. The Corina’s soundstage is huge (wide and tall) and notes have a lot of weight. Heard Corina back to back with Stax X-9000 and was impressed at how close Corina comes. It’s like going from Microsoft Flight Simulator 1995 to flying a real plane. DCA Corina: It’s unbelievable how much better this is than the Voce.
